I’m a forty something suburban domestic goddess (not) Okay, let me start again. I am a forty something suburban wife and stay at home mom. I used to be really cool before I had kids. Born on the East Coast, lived in the big ole state of Texas for a dozen years and now sort of ensconced in the O.C. I used to work and loved it. Now I am raising people and love it. But every once in awhile I miss just being Mary. Not mom and not honey. I could get away with just being funny, creative, a bit selfish, a contributor and on and on. So read my attempts at recapturing some of the funniness, creativity, selfishness, contributions and on and on.
Interests:
Reading, family, travel, genealogy, gardening, exploring new places, maintaining friendships, laughing, conversation-sometimes about really important stuff and sometimes about nothing at all!
UPDATE: No longer ensconced in the OC. Now in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The good news is I’m still forty something!
UPDATE: Definitely time for an update. Still in Kuala Lumpur. No longer in my forties. Yes, I’ve been blogging that long. Seven years.
UPDATE: Was living in India. Repatriated last month. Now enjoying life in beautiful New England. As of today I am fifty-four years old! And posting on this blog for nearly ten years.
gotcha!
I just found your blog. I love your writing. You must be a secret professional author. I feel so in tune with the stuff you write. Except I don’t have kids, so maybe I’m still cool?
I might write comments on ancient posts because I’m just seeing this stuff fresh. I like your categories, too. Way better than Cosmo! (I know, not much of a compliment.) Way more relaxing to read than The New Yorker. (Is that better?)
Thank you! Thank you! My family likes my writing but I figure they are a bit biased….happy to hear someone else enjoys it! Please comment all you want…and yes, you are probably still cool!
Mary,
I love love love your blog! The way you write, your insight and perspective, your sense of humor…all of it!
Megan,
Thank you so much for taking the time to read it! And for commenting! You made my day!
Mary
Hi Mary,
Enjoy reading your blog. Miss the magic of your smile and laughter.
Thanks, KHD…… And you have to know I feel exactly the same way about you. Exactly.
Mary,
I am now ALL caught up and Love to see what you have to say. It makes me feel like you never left Texas as if we are sitting at your kitchen table chatting away. Keep em coming… and …. Come back to Texas!!
Nan
Maybe one of these days I will surprise you!!!
Mary, I really enjoyed reading your blog, I often have my own musings but am not lucky enough to be able to write them down at this point, it is really how I entertain myself I get very deep in though and it is obvious that you do too. I too was very lucky that I got to be a stay at home mom for quite a while. Now that Russell goes to a very expensive private school (Providence Country Day) I find myself in the position of really needing to contribute. I cannot complain though we are very lucky and I really do like my job. I do love San Fran though we went ther and to the wine country on our honeymoon. Well I will check in periodically. Take care. Marylee
I know, Marylee, I get those same feelings about wanting to contribute…! And I always hope it passes really, really quickly…just kidding…..I had 14 years with the company when I took the package in Dallas…no sooner was the ink dry on those papers and I realized I was pregnant with Annie…..okay, maybe I knew beforehand…but isn’t timing in life everything?
And Marylee, if you are the scheduler for a busy mayor then I think you can jot a few of your musings down….girl, if that city is the colorful place it used to be back in the day then you will be able to write a book….that will pay for your son’s college education…seriously, he is a fortunate boy to have you as a mom
Hello again.
Reading your blog is one of my favorite things. I always take something away, a lesson, a laugh, a tear or a smile. It is a little gift. Every time. Every post.
Thanks Mary, and keep ’em coming!
Megan
Hey, Megan! Thanks so much for taking the time to read AND comment. I am really, really glad that you are enjoying it. I will keep them coming. I promise! Have a wonderful weekend! Mary
Hi Mary
I found your blog entry on the John Gordon case and loved it!
I want to add a link to it on the John Gordon section of my website: http://www.stacyhouse.com.
I enjoyed your other blog entries also.
Peter Martin
Hi Peter,
I am honored that you loved the blog entry. Add away! The blog posting would have had a different ending if it weren’t for you.
You are the reason John Gordon’s name was cleared so many years later. Job well done! You rock!
How was the ceremony? Do you know what prompted your constituent to have you push for the clearing of John’s name? And finally- are there any descendants of the Gordon family in RI today?
I did not realize he was pardoned in the same place he was convicted. Amazing.
Thanks for looking after the citizens of my beloved old state-past and present.
All the best,
Mary
I agree… as stated…. “if these building are demolished or not preserved then there will be nothing left.”
Peter
Your blog caught my eye cause my name is Mary too. We have some things in common other than the name – our age, the laughing and maybe the moving! I am new at the blogging thing but it was nice to read your blog!!
I can’t find a place to comment on your recent posts. Please advise.
That’s strange! Not sure why that is….will research and advise…have you had any problems with your blog?
As always enjoyed your blog ! I promised you I would comment more often so here it is !! It was wonderful seeing you and safe travels on your way back !!
Hi, Mary,
Just got sent your blog address from a mutual friend in Kuala Lumpur. If Jane likes you, I already know I will. She is an excellent judge of character and appreciates a good sense of humor. That’s why we are friends. 🙂
Looking forward to getting to know you through your blog.
Best regards,
Stacy
Hi Stacy,
Thanks so much for the note!
Jane is a lovely lady and one of the first people (along with her sidekick) I met in Kuala Lumpur….! I liked her from day one.
I hope you enjoy the blog and that you don’t think I am too wacky….. 🙂
All the best,
Mary
Hi Mary
I found your blog about the Haughey family from Lurgan I am visiting Ireland from New Zealand at the moment and visited the cemetery and took a photo of the gravestone erected there by my great grandfather Charles Haugey. Are the Haugheys your ancestors too? Would love to hear from you.
Kind regards
Jeanette Curran
PS I I Have a copy of the book From Tara to Holyhead about their journey to New Zealand!
Hi Jeanette! We communicated way back in 2008 and I recommended the book to you. Glad you got it and glad you got to visit Ireland. I was in Lurgan a couple of years ago. I still have relatives there. Happy that you made it to the cemetery. If you need any help while there let me know. 🙂 Best, Mary
